"We sheltered in a ruined building and I peeked cautiously out. There was the invader, still poking at the pile of rubble. As I watched it wheeled away and slid off, heading away from us. Cally tapped me on the arm and pointed; her and Rice ran, crouching low, to another heap of rubble and Jim and I dashed to cover behind a couple of burned-out cars. Bernard was lagging behind, fumbling with his rucksack.
"Cally and Rice ran from cover to cover, heading for a large ruined building. Cally was in the lead and as she sprinted for a rubble pile she fired off a burst at the Dalek. I was watching it when she fired and saw a flash of light from the Dalek. Thinking back it was really a few flashes very close together, and I think each flash was its force-field or whatever deflecting a bullet. Cally made it to the pile but Rice was a bit behind her and running flat out. The Dalek whirled around and fired. I saw Rice surrounded for a fraction of a second by a blue-white glow and then he fell heavily.
"I couldn't see Cally - she was behind the pile I guessed - but I could see Rice sprawled there in the open. Just then Bernard came up behind me and held out a spherical grenade. 'Let's see what this does,' he said. The Dalek swivelled its eye-stalk about, and must've spotted us as it began to glide towards us. Without warning Bernard stood up and threw the grenade. It was right on the button. There was a ball of flame and a wave of heat, and when I looked out over the hood of the car I saw a cloud of smoke with the Dalek emerging from it. The Dalek was clearly damaged - it was wavering from side to side as it came towards us and its eye-stalk was moving jerkily. Jim stepped out from behind the car and opened fire at close range on full auto. Again I saw the flickering light around the invader as its force-field deflected bullets, but this time the flickering stopped before the firing did and I saw the Dalek twitch as rounds hit it. Jim ducked back into cover and I saw the Dalek's three appendages slowly droop down until they pointed at the ground and smoke begin to rise from around the middle of the creature, or vehicle, or whatever it was.
"We began to head for the big ruined building, dodging from cover to cover, Cally first. When she got to the building she looked over a low piece of wall and suddenly ducked down, pointing urgently across to my left. I looked across to see another Dalek approaching.

"It was still round the corner of the building and between myself calling to Jim and Cally signalling to Bernard we managed to make it to the building before the Dalek rounded the corner. Everyone was in what they thought was a good ambush position. Jim was peeking round the far corner of the building, Cally had jumped the wall and was inside the ruined building looking out, and I was lying looking over a pile of rubble and bits of metal sheet. Bernard had flattened himself against the wall of the building and, looking back, was quite exposed.
"The invader rounded the corner and although it could not have seen us it reacted first. There was a thin whining sound, a flash and Bernard was momentarily surrounded by the blue-white light and flopped down. I think everyone panicked. I certainly did and dashed back to another pile of junk further from where the Dalek was. Cally disappeared, and I did not see her until next day. Jim abandoned his position at the corner and began to run back towards me. Just as I dived behind the pile I heard the whine again and was aware of the blue-white light. I looked over and saw Jim motionless on the ground.
"The Dalek glided towards where Rice and Jim lay, and I took the chance to run for it."
