Corporal Thrapple, B Section
Lieutenant Cattermole, commanding First Platoon, B Company, 3rd Bywater Sharpshooters
On the 152nd day of this year B section was advancing ahead of the rest of the platoon, searching for enemy forces which were thought to be in the area between the Hora and the Nura, south-west of the city of Dunhold. We were moving off-road to avoid detection. Leaving a wooded area, through my scanscope I saw movement in a small village in the farm-land ahead. This was, we later discovered, called Fairhedge and its inhabitants had fled ahead of the advancing enemy. I observed an enemy force advancing into the hamlet. The village consisted of three houses, each with a walled field behind it, and was situated on the junction of two roads. The house nearest our position had been abandoned for some time and it and the walls of its field were dilapidated.
The enemy were in three groups; one advanced up the road and one entered the enclosures on either side of the road. At once I sent Delta team under Lance-Corporal Scroggle forward into a small clump of heath-poplars which grew close to the nearest house, and led Charlie team to another clump to Scroggle's left. We were seen crossing open ground and the enemy fired a few shots from well beyond effective range. The enemy group which had been advancing down the road moved behind the dilapidated house and took up a position behind a wall facing our position. Leaving privates Hightower, Sedge & Brocket to keep this group's heads down I moved to LCpl Scroggle's position and discovered that Delta team had pinned down a second enemy group which had taken cover behind the wall of the nearest house's garden.
As I watched for further enemy I observed a third group moving down the road towards Delta team and surmised that they were intending to outflank Charlie team and were not yet aware of Delta team. I pointed out targets to Scroggle and his team and gave the order to fire. I saw two of the enemy fall and the rest fled back down the road. I moved back to Charlie team and was told that they thought they had hit two of the enemy behind the wall and that return fire had stopped. Leaving them I returned to Delta team who reported that the enemy appeared to have abandoned their position behind the wall opposite them.
For a moment there was no enemy fire to be heard and I led Scroggle and his team to the wall recently held by the enemy, trusting that none were in wait there. Arriving at the wall Scroggle observed a large group of the enemy in some disorder at the far end of the enclosure and a leader berating them. Delta team at once opened fire on them, bringing down three, whereupon the rest fled. Private Hightower joined me and reported that the enemy had disappeared from in front of Charlie team and I ordered that they also advance. After some time there was no sign or sound of the enemy and we took possession of the rest of the hamlet. There was no sign of any inhabitants, and the houses seemed to have been vacated in haste. We also found that we had accounted for nine of the enemy.
Later that day we were joined by C section.
