As part of a major enemy offensive, large groups of infantry were able to infiltrate through a thinly-held part of the front. This put the entire defence of the area to the south of Dunhold in danger. Between the enemy and the strategic bridge at Karstberg lay Precinct XIII - an abandoned outpost of the Rural Constabulary. A few veterans, demobilised for reasons of infirmity, were settled in military colonies in the area. A group of these who had fought together early in the defence of Dunhold left their farms and workshops, took up arms, and on their own initiative occupied the outpost to await reinforcements. Their names were Throst Steinolfsson, Thorvard Gillisson, Kolfinn Olesson, Arngeir Hundisson and Bjalfi Lambisson.
