Bolt action MANHUNT Scenario from Bolt action 2nd Edition

“In order to gather information about the enemy forces in the area, your platoon has been ordered to capture an enemy officer for interrogation. If this cannot be achieved, the officer must be eliminated. ….….In order to capture the officer, an infantry unit must assault the officer’s unit in close quarters and destroy it”

British Defenders Set up on Board (all Regular 51st Highland Division).
Reg Officer team 1st LT & 2 men; Reg Forward Obs 3-man team; Reg Pack Howitzer; Reg Medium Mortar.
In reserves – Reg MMG team, 2 Squads of Ten Reg Infantry, Reg Bren Gun Carrier.

German Attackers (split into 2 waves)

1st wave
Officer team 1st Lt & 2 Men; Med Mortar team and spotter; 2 10-man Inexperienced Infantry.
In reserves Hanomag, 2 6-man teams of Fallshirmjager(vet) and Medium MG team.

British Set up 12” from centre of board in and around the village ruins.

TURN 1
Picture
As per scenario set up attackers get prep bombardment. Direct hit on a member of British mortar team (blue die), pin on Forward Obs team. Officer and pack howitzer shrug it off….
Germans approach from South West after prep bombardment (turn 1).

As per photos, the officer and his 2 squads of inexperienced infantry and mortar approach from the cornfields. Only other action this turn was an attempt to call in Allied artillery but observer team failed their test so didn’t happen.

TURN 2
German Officer “snap to” commands 2 squads forward into ruins / forest. Mortars miss. British Officer scarpers into small ruin to North (by oil barrels). Fallshirmjager squad advances onto east side of board. Hanomag comes on from South Road opening fire on pack howitzer team, killing one member. British forward observer calls in co-ordinates successfully (goes off turn 3). British infantry and MMG approach ruins from North.

TURN 3
Bombardment goes off – Putting pins on all Germans within range, including the  Hanomag, officer and both Inexperienced Squads as well as nicely hidden Mortar spotter in ruined house. Fallshirmjager on East side assault and convincingly defeat Pack Howitzer squad (rolling way over what was needed!). Hanomag advances and puts pin on Forward Obs team. German squads move N.E. across road in cover. The other Fallshirmjager and MMG squad run up from South Road. British Infantry reserves come on East of board at advance and shoot at Fallshirmjager (who’d just killed their mates!) Took out 4 of them – tough guys resolutely passed break test. No messing. Bren Carrier advances though cornfields on West and shoot up officer team pinning and killing one. British infantry squad at north advance to cover in front of farmhouse.

Turn 3: Fallshirmjager Squad 2 and MMG team (obscured by building to left) run up after Hanomag.

Turn 3: “revenge” for killing of the pack howitzer….

TURN 4

Mostly German movement this turn. German mortar pass order test and roll a six direct hit on british mortar, taking it out. German officer prepare to attack Bren carrier who use escape rule for “Recce” vehicles and scarper. (fog of war – I’m not entirely certain why the british infantry squad didn’t unload into the remnants of Falshirmjager, they’re just frozen to spot).
Hanomag shoots forward obs team to bits….

Turn 4 - Bren Carrier in reverse! (mortar team to right are jubilant at taking out their rival)

TURN 5
Mostly just German infantry movement all toward the officer team – who hot foot it into large farm house (chickens). British infantry squads brace themselves for close quarters fighting…
To the west, the Bren carrier dinks forward and shoots up HQ squad, killing the Officer.
Picture
Turn 5….” What ho men…I say, be a good chap and put the kettle on would you old boy”

TURN 6
With the last dice of the turn from the bag, the officer squad ran out of building (top left).

In Conclusion:

A very good game, Allied win with the officer team being out of Germans grasp – although felt like a complete drubbing to me as British.

Germans just a fraction away from 100% success, like half a move more and British would have had no defence. Very strong, killing 5 out of the 8 british units. Fallshirmjager excellent – but iron crosses to the Ostruppen inexperienced squad who defeated a regular infantry squad only taking one casualty in return.

Taking the pack howitzer was daft in this scenario due to where I placed it. I could have towed it on with the Bren Carrier maybe. As a defender in this one prob better taking another unit of infantry – or a sniper.

Moment of the game - prob mortar passing order test then rolling a six to destroy british mortar. (turn 6 didn’t happen….)

Most German units that got in did something. Couple were just a “bit late to the party” so didn’t contribute. I’m looking at you 2nd unit of Fallshirmjager!
