Relations between Taulfan and his erstwhile advisors and inner guard became more and more strained. One morning a kitchen-dame who had a soft spot for Saylok took him aside and passed on a rumour she had heard. She said that Taulfan had engaged a barbarian chieftain to deal with Zou Kov and that he, with a band of picked warriors, was arriving the following day.
When Saylok passed on the news Zou Kov did not hesitate. He had heard a similar story from a stable-hand, with the additional detail that the hired barbarians were led by the infamous Utarg and his sidekick Tythok. During the day Zou Kov contrived to meet his men in ones and twos and pass on his plan. That night they left the mansion carrying as much of Taulfan's treasure as they could carry, Teragram having easily dealt with the locks on the treasury door. They loaded the loot onto a pack horse and prepared to leave; however they were intercepted by the stable-hand, Oswald, who pleaded with them to take him on. So, with the horse carrying most of the loot and Oswald the stable-hand carrying the remainder and all their equipment and supplies, they set off northwards.
